Chapter 6

Christine stared at Jamie in complete shock. As hard as she tried to keep her feelings solidly in check, they simply crumbled like a stale biscuit; she didn’t know what to believe. She had wanted to be Jamie’s girlfriend for a year now but he had been too infatuated with Ani to even give her a second look. It was true that Ani was her best friend — had been ever since grade four — but she had always envied Ani’s innate ability to attract all the boys. It pissed her off, especially since Ani never seemed to notice that they all chased after her, and she didn’t want any of them anyway. Chris always came second in line, and sometimes it seemed like the boys would only go out with her because she hung around with Ani Sauvé.

She would stare at Ani sometimes, trying to figure out what it was that the boys were seeing. Sure she was slim and was quite well endowed in the bust area, but was that all it took? Then she wondered if it was her long auburn hair that was soft and full and shiny, or her piercing dark eyes that possessed a mysterious and exotic allure. It had to be the boobs. She tried to convince herself that all of that “pretty” stuff didn’t matter to boys as long as they were getting the cupcake, but the truth of the matter was that as much as they focused almost completely on the “getting the cupcake” part, the pretty factor was the candied sprinkles. If there was even a remote possibility of winning those candied sprinkles, they would actually forgo the plain cupcake for a time. Everybody loves cupcakes with candied sprinkles and Ani was a sweet, moist, frosted, candied sprinkled cupcake of magnanimous proportions. Christine knew that she was nothing but a dry bran muffin by comparison. A big, puffed-up, day-old bran muffin. As much as Christine loved her best friend, she also hated her. Ani was the whole package and there was no way she could ever compete with that; at least when it came to boys, and even more unfortunately, when it came to Jamie.

She stared at Jamie as he talked, sipping at her wine cooler almost compulsively and lighting up one of her Colts. The more he spoke, the more Chris felt like she wanted to agree with him. It wasn’t that he was right but because she was angry, and getting angrier by the second. Jamie was her boyfriend, not Ani’s, and everything he was saying, everything he was planning, was because he still harboured his obsession for Ani.

“Jamie, man,” Rick started. “I think you’re taking this a bit too far. So what, he hit you? Big fuckin’ deal. Why didn’t you just hit him back?”

“Because, you fuckin’ moron, he took me by God damn surprise,” Jamie lied, knowing full well that getting in a fight with Cameron was the last thing he ever wanted. He knew from play fighting in the past that getting hit by Cam was like getting hit by a bus.
